Academic Career:

Jesús María Casal Hernández is Professor of Constitutional Law at the Catholic University Andrés Bello (Caracas/Venezuela). From 1999 until 2009 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law and from 2009 - 2015 Director of the Law Research Institute at the same University. He was also President of the Venezuelan Constitutional Law Association and is a member of the Ibero-American Institute for Constitutional Law, the Ibero-American Institute for Constitutional Process Law and the International Research Group on Fundamental Rights and Constitutional Review of the Rule of Law Programme for Latin America of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. His main research interests are fundamental rights and constitutional review. Dr. Casal Hernández has published numerous books and articles about these themes.

In 2019, Dr. Casal Hernández received the Georg Forster Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Dr. Casal Hernández's research at the MPIL refered to the dismantling of the rule of law and democracy in Venezuela and other countries in the region. The aim was to identify and discuss preventive and corrective institutional mechanisms. The investigation of the role of the Constitutional Chamber of the Venezuelan Supreme Court played a central role. Dr. Casal Hernández still works on the Ius Constitutionale Commune project.
