Minerva Research Group on Judicial Independence

Contemporary Challenges to Judicial Independence

The Minerva Research Group on Judicial Independence under the auspices of Anja Seibert-Fohr conducts a comprehensive research project on contemporary problems of judicial independence in domestic, comparative and international law. Its focus is on necessary standards for independent national and international courts. By examining the theoretical foundations of judicial independence, analyzing and comparing national doctrine the project seeks to guide the emerging concept of judicial independence in international law. At the same time new avenues shall be identified to address current challenges at the domestic level. The project will comprise several doctoral dissertations and a post-doctorate.

The project is funded by the prestigious Max Planck Society which is an independent research organization promoting and supporting high-level research. The Heidelberg Max Planck Institute (MPIL) where the research group is located conducts research in different fields of international law and comparative public law. It is closely affiliated to Heidelberg University Law Faculty.
