MPIL Momentum "The Long Shadow of the Russian Revolution: Its Legacy in International Law“ (with Veronika Bílková, Maria Issaeva, Anne Peters & Cindy Wittke)

The impact and legacy of the 1917 Russian Revolution is still with us today. For Russia and the countries of the former socialist bloc, the revolution inaugurated a new legal order. But it also led to a profound transformation of the entire system of international law and politics, and prompted changes and transformations which can still be felt today. To mark the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution, we invite you to explore these changes and transformations, and to discuss how their legacies are still present in today’s international law. Our panelists shall be drawing, inter alia, on some of the contributions which have just been published in the Journal of the History of International Law http://booksandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/15718050, but shall also be including reflections from historical, philosophical, and political science perspectives.

Panelists:

  • Dr Veronika Bílková (Charles University, Prague / Institute of International Relations, Prague)
  • Maria Issaeva (Threefold Legal Advisors, Moscow)
  • Professor Anne Peters (Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg / University of Basel / University of Heidelberg / Freie Universität Berlin / University of Michigan Law School)
  • Dr Cindy Wittke (Leibniz-Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, Regensburg)
  • Alexandra Kemmerer (Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg / Berlin) (Moderator)

The event is hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.

The panel discussion will be the first event of our new series MPIL Momentum, a series of lunch talks (12:00 - 14:00 h) organized by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law’s Berlin Office, featuring new research from the Heidelberg Institute and current issues in international law, bringing together an audience from academia, politics, government, the media, and from a wider public – students, professors, diplomats, journalists, politicians, lawyers, a microcosm of Berlin–Mitte. We hope to welcome also many of our alumni and alumnae, and friends of the Institute.

A light buffet lunch will be served.

Please register in advance until 9 October 2017 at berlin@mpil.de
