04.07.2018: Heidelberger Salon. International Law from East Asian Perspectives

On Wednesday, 4 July 2018 the inaugural session of “Heidelberger Salon” took place at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. The new series is a forum for reflection and debate on current, but at the same time fundamental problems in international law and politics and addresses to a selected group of participants from academia, politics, government, diplomacy, culture and the media.

Hosted by the Berlin Officeof the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Quianfan Zhang (Peking University Law School), Takao Suami (Waseda University Law School), and Anne Peters discussed "International Law from East Asian Perspectives".

The evening was moderated by Yuwen Fan (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, KFG "The International Rule of Law - Rise or Decline?”) and Alexandra Kemmerer.

The panelists thereby primarily reflected upon overarching differences and commonalities as well as upon possible challenges to a universal understanding and practice of international law, as seen from a constitutionalist perspective. While Quianfan Zhang gave an interesting insight view on difficulties of Chinese constitutionalism, Takao Suami outlined the Japanese academic perception and approach to international law in general. Anne Peters particularly emphasized the challenges, but at the same time the importance of cultivating a universal perspective on international law.

After a fruitful discussion with the audience, all participants were invited to enjoy the rest of the evening with drinks and finger food on the rooftop terrace of the academy.
