Karl Doehring Lecture: Thomas Buergenthal (George Washington University Law School)

Human Rights: From San Francisco to The Hague

In this lecture, Buergenthal traces the evolution of contemporary international human rights law from its source - the Charter of the United Nations - to the International Criminal Court. The author does not analyze individual provisions of the vast body of contemporary human rights law, nor does he deal with the jurisprudence international and regional human rights courts have produced. Instead, Buergenthal's focus is on providing a panoramic overview of the contemporary international human rights system. The lecture concludes with observations on the significance of the system and some proposals to strengthen it.
