Joint MPIL-MPFPR "law and development" discussion group with a brown-bag lunch

Dear all,

On July 12th, 1-2.30pm, we bring you the next instalment of the joint MPIL-MPFPR "law and development" discussion group with a brown-bag lunch at the MPIL (Im Neuenheimer Feld 535, room 214).

Frauke Lachenmann (http://www.mpfpr.de/foundation/staff/research-staff/frauke-lachenmann/) from the MPFPR and Astrid Wiik (http://www.mpfpr.de/foundation/staff/research-staff/astrid-wiik/) from Uni Heidelberg join us as our speakers (see short bios at the end of this email). Frauke and Astrid will present their ideas surrounding the issue of “Sustainable Development Goals and the Rule of Law: A Missed Opportunity?”

Their talk will be commented on by our own Leonie Vierck (http://www.mpil.de/de/pub/institut/personen/wissenschaftlicher-bereich/lvierck.cfm), who will seek to provide some theoretical insights to complement the presentation. This will be followed by an inclusive discussion that tries to bring together the issues raised in the foregoing presentations with practical and theoretical considerations.

Please bring along your own food for the brown-bag lunch; catering will not be provided.

The "law and development discussion group brown-bag lunches" are a place to connect researchers and practitioners, the MPIL and the MPFPR. We wish to do so through presentations and discussions on topics of law and development in post-conflict and transitional countries, international institutional law, and sustainability governance. We have now created annual thematic foci with three to four sessions taking place per year. The thematic focus for 2017-2018 is the rule of law in peace and conflict. The concept of the rule of law in this context has gained significant attention in recent years – both with regard to its application at the national, sometimes regional, and international levels. Yet, rule of law and democracy promotion are also internationally contested concepts, which paves the way for an academically exciting discussion.

Please find more info on our plans on the new "law and development discussion group" website:

We hope to see you on July 12th!

Looking forward to a lively discussion,

Amber Rose Maggio, Ilaria Vianello, and Leonie Vierck

On behalf of the MPFPR and the MPIL
