"Colombia’s Peace Agreement: Strengths and Challenges“,

Peace negotiations between the Colombian government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia  (FARC–EP) reached a final agreement on August 24, 2016. A plebiscite to ratify the deal on October 2, 2016 was unsuccessful. A revised peace deal was ratified by Congress on November 30, 2016. After disarmament, FARC became a political party and participated in the 2018 elections. But the Special Jurisdiction for Peace and the Truth Commission have lagged due to delays in the approval of implementing legislation. The Constitutional Court has upheld most of the implementing legislation, with a few exceptions. In August, President Ivan Duque took office. As one of the leaders of the“No” vote he pushed for an amendment to the legislation concerning the Jurisdiction for Peace for the military but pledged not to undo the Peace Agreement and to continue with its implementation. What are the challenges ahead?
