MPIL Momentum "Long Shadows of German Colonialism: Contextualizing the Case of Rukoro et al. v. Federal Republic of Germany". A Panel Discussion with Matthias Goldmann and Jonas Kreienbaum, moderated by Alexandra Kemmerer

On 5 January 2017, various representatives of the Nama and Ovaherero peoples filed a class action complaint against Germany in the New York Southern District Court, addressing both past and present-day issues linked to the atrocities committed by Imperial German soldiers in today’s Namibia between 1904 and 1908. The case sheds light on legal and political implications of Germany’s long-neglected colonial past – and has, in itself, become part of an emerging societal debate about the long shadows of German Colonialism. Setting out from the current state of the New York proceedings and from the legal and factual issues at stake, our panelists shall contextualize the case from perspectives of history and international law.

Panelists:

  •  Jun.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Goldmann (Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main / Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg)
  • Dr. Jonas Kreienbaum (Rostock University)
  • Alexandra Kemmerer (Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg / Berlin) (Moderator)

The event is hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Berlin Office.

The panel discussion is part of our series MPIL Momentum, featuring new research from the Heidelberg Institute and current issues in international law.
