Making (International) Law Public. A Conversation with the 2022 MPIL / MPI-CSL Journalists in Residence

In our times of renewed global conflict, climate change and democratic backsliding, international law depends (as always) on informed publics to function and to address the complex global problems which we face. The ongoing war in Ukraine is also an "information war", and in the dynamically evolving fields of strategic climate change litigation (and human rights-based strategic litigation more broadly), communicative practices and media strategies have become integral parts of comprehensive judicial interventions. This draws into view the role media plays in relation to (international) law, but also the challenges of technological change, structural changes of platform economies, concerns about fake news, the rise of big data and algorithmic accountability - and the problems which a rules-based international order faces without sufficiently informed publics.

Our conversation will bring together distinguished journalists and members of the MPIL and MPICSL academic communities for an in-person event at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) to discuss these (and more) questions at the intersections of media and (international) law. The evening will feature conversations with all three current 2022 fellows of the MPIL Journalist in Residence Fellowship Programme (https://www.mpil.de/en/pub/research-interaction/mpil-journalist-in-residence.cfm), Alexander Borodikhin, Rishika Pardikar and Jacob Kushner, in exchange with our inaugural 2020 MPIL JiR fellow, Christian Jakob (taz), Professor Anne Peters (MPIL) and Dr Michael Kilchling (MPI-CSL).

The event is hosted by the Berlin Office of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL), in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (MPICSL).
