You are here: Research Archive The Democratic Legitimacy of Europe's Judges
This research project deals with the selection procedures for judges to the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the EU. Both courts effectively exercise public authority in the European legal area. This demands a democratic perspective on the selection of their judges. Accordingly, this project reconstructs the selection procedures in light of the democratic principles in the law of the EU and the Council of Europe. The project comparatively analyses the procedures for concretizing criteria for judicial selection and for applying these criteria in individual selection procedures. It carves out potentials for reform to improve the democratic legitimacy of Europe’s judges.
