Academic Career:

Before joining the MPIL in April 2022, Katharina McLarren was a lecturer for International Relations at the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kleve. She also spent several years teaching and researching at the University of Passau (International Politics), where she was one of the coordinators of the DAAD-funded German-Tunisian research project "Tunisia in Transition".

Ms. McLarren completed her PhD in political science with a dissertation on "Religion and International Society - Approaches to including religion in the International Relations research agenda". This followed up on her MA thesis on religion in US foreign policy which she submitted for her MA degree in Governance & Public Policy at the University of Passau. She earned her BSc degree in International Relations (international program) at the LSE.

Ms. McLarren also gained work experience in the field of political/civic education as the deputy director of the Franken Akademie as well as in the field of diplomacy while working as a research assistant at the embassy of Afghanistan in Berlin.
