About the Project:

In 2024, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) will look back on 100 years of tradition. Founded in Berlin in 1924, the Institute for Basic Research in International Law, European Union Law and Comparative Public Law has been based in Heidelberg since 1949. The centenary is an occasion to remember and reflect on the historical development of the Institute and its contribution to scholarship and legal practice. At the same time, it is an opportunity to highlight (and celebrate) the significance of the Institute and its research achievements: the global network of its cooperation partners, alumni and alumnae, its importance for courts, international institutions and organisations worldwide, and the impact and reputation of its various publications and interventions. As the oldest of the legal institutes of the Max Planck Society, the MPIL is one of the most traditional, recognised and respected institutes of the MPG and an ambassador for the MPG's idea of excellent basic research as a common good.
The history of the Institute is approached in two ways: through the interdisciplinary seminar series "100 Years of Public Law" and the anniversary blog mpil100.de.
