Planning your Trip

Before you come to Germany, there are a few things you should prepare.

EURAXESS Deutschland, the information and counseling center for internationally mobile scholars of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has assembled on its internet portal all important information and a checklist of things to consider prior to your arrival in Germany.

Here are further suggestions to help you orient yourself in Germany, as well as all important information concerning visa formalities and entry into the country.

Also remember that you require health insurance and possibly liability insurance for your stay in Germany!

The DAAD also offers additional information.

Accommodations

Please arrange for accommodations in a timely manner before your arrival. Housing in Heidelberg is in short supply and also rather expensive. It can be difficult to find a furnished room even for just a few months. If desired, we will send you a list of guest houses in the area. We kindly ask you to book accommodations yourself. The Institute cannot assume this task or act as your agent in this regard. The following is a list of accommodations services for Heidelberg and vicinity:

Health insurance

Visiting scholars are not insured by the Max Planck Institute. You are advised to extend your existing insurance coverage or to obtain insurance specifically covering the duration of your stay. Please make sure that your health insurance is conforming to German standards. Proof of sufficient health insurance is required by the time the grant begins, at the latest.
